Description
History
The Mazzei family has been producing wine since the eleventh century in Tuscany. Ser Lapo Mazzei is in fact known for having been the first to draw up a document in 1398 for the denomination of “Chianti”; subsequently, in 1435, his niece Madonna Smeralda Mazzei marries Piero Agnolo da Fonterutoli and thanks to the union, the Castle becomes part of the family heritage. Today the family has even reached the 24th generation of winemakers. Another key figure in the history of the family is Filippo “Philip” Mazzei, a close friend of Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin among others. Today the company is led by Lapo Mazzei, Cavaliere del Lavoro and president of the Chianti Classico Consortium for over 20 years, and his sons Filippo and Francesco.

Production method
The grapes come from 7 different areas within the vineyards of the estate, with an altitude ranging from 250 to 550 m a.s.l.. The harvest is usually done by hand starting from mid-September; fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature and lasts for 16-18 days including maceration. Aging takes place in French oak barrels and non-new French oak barriques for 12 months. It then rests for another 3 months in the bottle.

Tasting notes
Intense and brilliant ruby red colour. On the nose typical Sangiovese notes of cherry, raspberry and currant, with gaggiolo, violet and rose petals, black pepper and cloves in a very elegant sequence. Balanced, soft and delicate on the palate, rightly alcoholic and medium-bodied; on the finish it reveals brighter tannins, a lively acidity and a pinch of sapidity. Pleasant, not overly long finish.
Possible combinations
Fonterutoli Chianti Classico is one of the emblems of this region and of this type of wine, so representative of the territory. The result of centuries of experience of the Mazzei family in the field of wine, it lends itself to pairing with platters of Tuscan cold cuts and fresh, tasty cheeses, or with first courses. Also excellent with steak and grilled meats; but let’s not forget that given the great balance it is very pleasant even if consumed by the glass.
