Description
History
The Gaja winery was founded way back in 1859 in Barbaresco, Piedmont, in the wine-growing center of the Langhe, and immediately established itself as one of the symbolic wineries of the region. The first owner of the family was Giovanni Gaja but the real qualitative turning point came with the vision and commitment of his son, Angelo Gaja, who immediately invested in the search for the most absolute quality. Among the main innovations carried out we include the reduction of the yield per hectare of land, the use of the barrique going against the stylistic refinement choices of the time for the region and type of wine and the introduction of longer cork stoppers. This allowed Angelo to express a new face of Piedmontese wine, without becoming too stuck in tradition, but rather starting from that and innovating. Angelo has always been supported in this journey by his wife Lucia, and today, with pride, his children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni follow in their father’s footsteps; His wines have been able to establish themselves on the entire global scene as products capable of enhancing the winemaking quality of Piedmont and more generally of Made in Italy in the world. The company today owns more than 92 hectares of vineyard area which it has always cultivated while respecting the land and the environment and produces around 350,000 bottles a year. Already starting from 1977, Gaja expanded his views beyond Piedmont to Tuscany with the Ca’Marcanda project in Bolgheri, where Bordeaux cuts are produced, and in Montalcino with Pieve Santa Restituta, also creating his own distribution of many other important wine-growing regions and areas.
