History
Inside the Ornellaia estate in Bolgheri there is a particular, almost “magical” vineyard. Unused for a long time, its potential was intuited around the 1980s, when the first vines were planted, in spite of forecasts and statistics. This vineyard of only 6 hectares has today revealed some of its secrets, giving life to one of the most famous wines in the world; a key element is the proximity to the sea, which reflects the sunlight causing a unique ripening of the grapes and influencing the product with the maritime winds and the mitigation of the climate; moreover, the subsoil is of very ancient blue clay precisely by virtue of the fact that in the past it was a seabed.
Grapes used
Merlot 100%
Production method
After careful selection of each single bunch, the grapes are pressed to obtain a high quality nectar. Each portion of the vineyard ferments separately, both in stainless steel tanks and in wooden barrels, and macerates for a period of 15-20 days, before being aged in barriques for one year. Subsequently, the wine is re-introduced into barriques for another year before being bottled.

Tasting notes
The wine is an intense ruby red colour. The nose reveals notes of very ripe red fruit: we perceive raspberry, blackberry, mulberry and cherry jam in alcohol, violet and dried rose petals. Complex notes of minerality and vegetal and balsamic hints of eucalyptus and peppermint, balanced by notes of vanilla and cocoa. Soft, ample, sumptuous and full-bodied in the mouth, balanced by lively acidity and silky tannins. Long finish that refers to notes of black berried fruits and cocoa. Very stylish.
Possible combinations
Masseto being a Merlot with a great structure, it goes perfectly with red meat, wild boar and aged cheeses. Bottle of great occasions.
