Gemma d’Abeto, a sweet and balsamic liqueur with a particular aroma obtained from the essence of fir, created in 1865 by the apothecary Frà Agostino Martini. It is produced by the Friars Servi di Maria of the Convent of Monte Senario in Tuscany and is excellent drunk alone, in coffee or hot milk.
The Gemma d’Abeto was highly decorated and known in many parts of the world, in particular at the Exhibitions of London 1902, Paris 1903 and Milan 1906.
Production method
Although the precise production process is not known, it is likely to be based on a method of maceration and distillation of fir needles to extract the aromatic essence, followed by possible aging in wooden barrels. The production of Gemma d’Abeto remains a secret of the friars.
