History

The Castle of Perno overlooks the village of the same name, which since 1932 has become a fraction of Monforte d’Alba. This medieval fortress was built by the Falletti family as a defensive stronghold and subsequently transformed into a stately home between the 17th and 18th centuries. Towards the end of the seventies of the last century, the Castle was purchased by the renowned publishing house Giulio Einaudi, who made it its own branch, twin of the one located in Via Biancamano in Turin, also becoming a work residence for their writers (among including Primo Levi, to whom a small square under the walls of Perno has recently been dedicated). Since 2012, the Castle has been owned by Prof. Gregorio Gitti, professor of civil law at the University of Milan and lawyer, also in the Lombard city. Since the beginning of the Gitti family’s project, the goal has been twofold: to bring the Castello di Perno back to its history, both to the more recent one as a cultural site, and to the more ancient one linked to the cultivation of vines and the production of wine with own grapes.

Production method

Cold maceration for 48 hours and spontaneous fermentation with maceration of about 20 days at a controlled temperature. Aging for 8 months in large oak barrels.

Tasting notes

In the nose there are aromas of crunchy fruit, which are progressively enriched with salty and ripe tones. On the palate, the wine reveals a solid structure, it is generous and soft, and manifests itself with a balanced, lively and tasty sip. The conclusion is characterized by a pleasant balsamic aftertaste.

Possible combinations

It can be combined with savory first courses seasoned with ragù or wild boar ragù, roasted and grilled red meat, red meat and medium-aged cheeses.
