History
The Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is one of the most historic and certainly one of the most famous wineries in the world. Located in Vosne-Romanée, one of the great communes of Burgundy reds, we have news of the estate since 1451 when the monks of the convent of St. Vivant decided to sell a small plot of land to the Croonembourg family. Over the centuries various properties have alternated until 1760, the year in which the Conti princes took over the cellar and the vineyards, deciding to change the denomination to La Romanée. In the 18th century it passed into the hands of the Duvalt Blochets and then to his successors the Leroy/Roch and the de Villain; during these changes of ownership the domaine has acquired important plots in all the most important grand crus. The flagships, however, remain the two monopole vineyards “La Romanée Conti” and “La Tache” which are managed by the company in monopoly, an absolute value in the Burgundy panorama. Today the company has about 25 hectares of land, since 2008 it has all been biodynamic with very low yields per hectare.
Production method
The Pinot Noir winemaking process in Burgundy follows rigorous techniques to enhance the unique characteristics of the grape. The grapes are harvested by hand and the bunches are selected in the vineyard to guarantee the quality of the final product. The grapes are pressed and fermented in oak vats for an average period of 10 to 15 days. During this process the must is stirred regularly to extract the tannins and aromas from the skins.
After fermentation, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and refinement, which always lasts an average of 12 to 18 months. During this period, the wine is tasted regularly to assess its development and potential.
Once the wine is mature, it is bottled and left to age for a few months before being marketed.
