Description
History
The history of the Ornellaia Estate begins in the 1980s with Lodovico Antinori who wanted to create a winery in Tuscany with a Californian idea of quality, experimentation and brand creation. He collaborated with the oenologist André Tchelistcheff and the young Federico Staderini, later also with Michel Rolland and other important names on the world wine scene. In 1999 the company was acquired by the Californian giant Mondavi and by the Frescobaldis. In 2005, the Frescobaldis acquired the entire estate and hired Axel Heinz as winemaker. The Ornellaia Estate has become a worldwide point of reference in just a few years.

Production method
The 2017 vintage in Bolgheri was marked by heat and drought. The harvest takes place by hand in boxes and the grapes are selected on a sorting table, also using an optical reading tool to identify the best berries. After the soft pressing, each variety and single parcel is vinified separately and the alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature. The malolactic fermentation takes place in new barriques for 70% and second passage for 30%. After 12 months of aging in barriques, the blend is created and the wine is settled for another 12 months in the bottle before being marketed.
