Description
History
The Spitaleri family has a long tradition of winemaking dating back to the 14th century, linked to the Order of the Hospitallers, recognized as the inventors of the oldest branded wine in 1102. In 1852, Felice Spitaleri, Marquis of Sant’Elia and Baron of Solicchiata, after completing his “grand tour”, founded the current winery. Felice was an innovator in the industry, creating the first Bordeaux blend in Italy and becoming an official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy in 1890. In 1907, Antonino Spitaleri, a descendant of Felice, stopped large-scale production, keeping only a few vineyards for private use. Today, the family owns several estates in eastern Sicily, where they produce renowned oranges.
