Description
History
Inside the Ornellaia estate in Bolgheri there is a particular, almost “magical” vineyard. Unused for a long time, its potential was intuited around the 1980s, when the first vines were planted, in spite of forecasts and statistics. This vineyard of only 6 hectares has today revealed some of its secrets, giving life to one of the most famous wines in the world; a key element is the proximity to the sea, which reflects the sunlight causing a unique ripening of the grapes and influencing the product with the maritime winds and the mitigation of the climate; moreover, the subsoil is of very ancient blue clay precisely by virtue of the fact that in the past it was a seabed.

Production method
Massetino is a wine produced by Tenuta Masseto using mainly Merlot with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. After the manual harvest, the grapes are destemmed and lightly pressed before being transferred to concrete tanks for spontaneous fermentation. Each part of the vineyard is vinified separately and the wine matures for 12 months in French oak barriques. After blending, the wine rests for a further 3 months in wood before final bottling.

Tasting notes
The wine is an intense ruby red colour. The nose reveals fruity notes of raspberries, blackberries, mulberries and cherries in alcohol, violets and dried rose petals. Complex notes of minerality and vegetal and balsamic hints of eucalyptus and peppermint, balanced by notes of vanilla and cocoa. Soft, ample, sumptuous and full-bodied in the mouth, balanced by lively acidity and silky tannins. Long finish that refers to notes of black berried fruits and cocoa. Very stylish.
Possible combinations
It goes perfectly with red meat, wild boar and aged cheeses.
