Description
History
La Vigna di San Martino a Argiano was created by agronomist Andrea Toccaceli and winemaker Giampaolo Chiettini, whose professional experience includes working at the renowned Isole e Olena estate. Sharing the ambition of producing a Chianti Classico that faithfully expresses a single vineyard, they selected a small plot of approximately one hectare in San Casciano in Val di Pesa. Situated at around 300 metres above sea level, the vineyard was replanted in 2013 and 2014 with several Sangiovese clones. Its soils contain Pliocene pebbles and gravel interspersed with ancient marine sands, contributing to the wine’s distinctive identity. Organic vineyard management and an intentionally limited production reflect a philosophy centred on quality and respect for the land. The first commercially released vintage was 2017.
Grape variety
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The grapes come exclusively from the estate’s small vineyard, managed according to organic farming principles. Winemaking focuses on expressing the identity of Sangiovese while preserving a balance between tannic structure, freshness and aromatic intensity. Ageing takes place in previously used oak vessels, including tonneaux and a 10-hectolitre cask, allowing the wine to develop complexity without excessive oak influence. This maturation helps harmonise the tannins and highlight the vineyard’s distinctive characteristics, resulting in an elegant and deeply expressive Riserva.
Alcohol content
14.5%.
Tasting notes
Intense, bright ruby red. The nose reveals a complex aromatic profile of ripe cherry, red berries and darker fruit nuances, complemented by spices, Mediterranean herbs and delicate toasted notes. The palate is structured yet balanced, with pronounced tannins, lively acidity and concentrated fruit providing depth and character. Spicy elements blend with appealing savoury freshness, leading to a long and persistent finish with lingering cherry and spice. A Chianti Classico Riserva that combines energy, personality and promising ageing potential.
Food pairings
Excellent with traditional Tuscan dishes such as Florentine steak, peposo beef stew, wild boar and roasted red meats. It also pairs beautifully with pappardelle served with game ragù, porcini mushrooms, braised meats and mature cheeses, particularly aged Pecorino Toscano. Its structure and vibrant freshness make it especially suitable for rich, flavourful dishes, where the wine retains its balance and distinctive character. Best served at around 16-18 °C.
