Description
History
In the sixteenth century, the Nittardi estate belonged to the famous Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti. During his stay in Rome, in 1549, he asked his nephew Leonardo to send him demijohns of Nittardi wine to offer to the Pope as an authentic gift. Michelangelo stated that he preferred “two barrels of wine rather than eight shirts”. Today, the current owners have made a similar gesture, donating the first bottles of wine to Popes Benedict XVI and Francis from the Maremma vineyards in Tuscany. The wine is called “Nectar Dei” in honor of the ancient tower of Nittardi.
Since 1981, Peter Femfert and his wife Stefania Canali have managed the Nittardi estate. Over the years, they have restored the vineyards and replaced the old vat room with a modern cellar. They have also created a competent and valid team led by the internationally renowned winemaker Carlo Ferrini and by the commercial director Giorgio Conte. Since 2013, their son Leon Femfert has joined the family business full-time, following both the technical and commercial aspects.
In 1999, the estate was extended to Maremma, on the southern coast of Tuscany, where 20 hectares of vineyards were planted with native and international grapes.

Tasting notes
Intense ruby red colour. The nose perceives delicious aromas of cherries, violets and notes of Mediterranean vegetation and licorice. The structure of the wine is remarkable, characterized by excellently balanced tannins and a lasting gustatory persistence. The combination of these elements makes the wine very pleasant on the palate, with a complexity that gradually develops, giving a memorable gustatory experience.
Possible combinations
It is suitable for pairing with first courses with meat sauce such as tortelli al ragù, or second courses such as peposo, steak or grilled beef.
