Description
History
Fontodi has been owned by the Manetti family since 1968, who comes entrepreneurially from the famous terracotta sector. The decision to also invest in wine and specifically in the Chianti Classico of Panzano derives precisely from this strong bond with the Tuscan territory and from the desire to enhance the quality production of the region’s excellences, especially Sangiovese. The company is certified organic and extends over 170 hectares of land of which just over 80 are planted with vineyards. All agriculture practiced follows principles of respect for the vineyard, the environment and nature and sustainability is the watchword in Fontodi: we try not only to avoid in the most categorical way the use of chemical and harmful products for the health of the environment, but rather to use material coming from the company itself as much as possible. For example, the vineyards are fertilized using a compost of pruning residues and manure that comes from the internal Chianina breeding. The cellar is very modern and develops vertically in order to exploit the force of gravity to carry out the various winemaking phases which allows us to maintain greater integrity of the fruit and obtain “healthier”, fragrant and intense wines.

Production method
The Chianti Classico Terrazze San Leolino Gran Selezione 2019 Fontodi is produced through a traditional and artisanal production method. The grapes, mainly Sangiovese, are harvested by hand and carefully selected to guarantee the highest quality. The winemaking takes place in concrete tanks and oak barrels, without the use of chemicals or enzymes. The wine is then aged in oak barrels of different capacities for at least 20 months and subsequently bottled without filtration.

Tasting notes
Intense ruby red color, with hints tending towards garnet. On the nose notes of ripe red fruit, cherry, ripe berries, slightly withered violets, herbaceous hints, roasting spices, coffee, black pepper and cloves. In the mouth it is lively, enveloping and broad with great acidity, elegant but lively tannins and an underlying minerality. Definitely long and fruity finish, with hints of spices.
Possible combinations
Fontodi is a great classic Chianti that has managed to carve out a large portion of admirers over the years thanks to the quality expressed in the glass and its rigorous attention to respecting the principles of organic and eco-sustainable agriculture. Also for these reasons it becomes a wine to be appreciated by the glass, for lovers of Sangiovese di Panzano. In combination it is excellent with first courses with meat sauce, even well-structured ones, or with red meats in general. Also excellent with selections of medium-aged cheeses.
