Description
History
The history of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia began in the 1980s when brothers Lodovico and Piero Antinori divided the family’s property in Bolgheri. Lodovico began the Ornellaia project with a clear idea in mind: to create a winemaking reality in Tuscany based on the Californian model, where quality and experimentation and then marketing and brand creation went hand in hand. The Russian winemaker André Tchelistcheff, who had achieved very important results in the creation of the Napa Valley as we know it today, and Federico Staderini, a talented young man, were called upon. Around the beginning of the 1990s, the collaboration with Michel Rolland and other important names in the world wine scene began. Around the end of 1999, the company was acquired by the Californian giant Mondavi and the Frescobaldi family. The new group immediately invested in the quality of its products, calling the oenologist Thomas Duroux from Bordeaux and placing Leonardo Raspini in charge of the agronomic sector. In 2005, the Frescobaldis acquired the entire estate and hired Axel Heinz, who is still the oenologist on the estate. The continuous succession of owners and important figures in the global oenological field has meant that in just a few years this company has become a point of reference not only for the area but throughout the world.

Production method
The grapes are harvested by hand and selected on a sorting table. They are then vinified separately depending on the plots; fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in concrete vats. The wine is then aged for 18 months in barriques (in which the assembly is done after the first 12) and then another 12 months before being released onto the market.

Tasting notes
The wine is an intense dark ruby red with garnet hues. On the nose we perceive distinctly the fruity sensations of cherry jam, black cherries in alcohol, blackberry jam, raspberries and berries, peppermint leaves, pepper, dried purple flowers, flint, vanilla, licorice, sandalwood, black pepper and tobacco. On the palate, the attack is sumptuous, broad and enveloping, soft and warm. Extraordinarily balanced by a notable freshness and elegant tannins, suggested and very ripe. The persistence in the mouth is considerable, leaving a pleasant hint of licorice and other spices; the aftertaste is very fine and elegant, confirming the notes previously perceived on the nose.
Possible pairings
A bottle for special occasions. Ideal with game, red meat dishes and/or medium-aged cheeses.
