History
Inside the Ornellaia estate in Bolgheri there is a particular, almost “magical” vineyard. Unused for a long time, its potential was realized around the 1980s, when the first vines were planted, despite predictions and statistics. This vineyard of just 6 hectares has today revealed some of its secrets, giving life to one of the most famous wines in the world; a key element is the proximity to the sea, which reflects the sunlight causing a unique ripening of the grapes and influencing the product with sea winds and climate mitigation; furthermore, the subsoil is of very ancient blue clay precisely by virtue of the fact that in the past it was a seabed.
Grapes used
Merlot 100%
Production method
After a careful selection of each individual bunch, the grapes are pressed to obtain a high quality nectar. Each portion of the vineyard ferments separately, both in stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels, and macerates for a period of 15-20 days, before being aged in barrique for a year. Subsequently, the wine is reintroduced into barrique for another year, before being bottled.

Tasting notes
The wine is intense ruby red in color. On the nose it reveals notes of very ripe red fruit: we perceive raspberry jam, blackberry, mulberry and cherry in spirit, violet and dried rose petals. Complex notes of minerality and vegetal and balsamic hints of eucalyptus and peppermint, balanced by notes of vanilla and cocoa. Soft, broad, sumptuous and full-bodied in the mouth, balanced by lively acidity and silky tannins. Long finish that recalls notes of black berries and cocoa. Very stylish.
Possible combinations
Masseto, being a Merlot with great structure, goes perfectly with red meat, wild boar and mature cheeses. Bottle for special occasions.
