Description
History
Thibault Liger-Belair took over his historic family estate in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 2001, giving new momentum to a winemaking heritage deeply rooted in Burgundy. Les Grands Chaillots perfectly reflects his philosophy through its blend of different Côte de Nuits terroirs. Approximately one hectare in Nuits-Saint-Georges contains vines planted between 1978 and 1986, while around two hectares in Chambolle-Musigny include older vines planted between 1954 and 1962. The different parcels are predominantly planted on clay-silt soils and are blended to combine the structure of Nuits-Saint-Georges with the elegance of Chambolle-Musigny.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, with approximately 20% of the 2022 crop vinified as whole bunches. Fermentation lasts around three weeks with particularly gentle extraction, preserving the purity of Pinot Noir and producing a refined tannic structure. The wine subsequently ages for approximately 15 months in oak barrels. The producer’s current technical information indicates around 30% new oak, adding structure and complexity without overwhelming the expression of the fruit.
Alcohol content
13% ABV.
Tasting notes
Bright ruby red in colour. The nose is elegant and fragrant, revealing raspberry, cherry and small red berries that develop towards blackcurrant and blackberry, complemented by floral, spicy and subtle earthy nuances. The palate is juicy and structured, with a velvety texture, fine tannins and mineral freshness providing balance and energy. The finish is long and persistent, with spicy, gently peppery notes and a distinctive hint of liquorice.
Food pairings
Excellent with roast poultry, duck, pork tenderloin, veal and white meats served with mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with porcini risotto, terrines, roasted vegetables and soft or medium-aged cheeses. Best served at around 14-16 °C, it is already highly enjoyable but will gain further complexity with several years of bottle ageing.
